ADOPTING THROUGH FOSTER CARE: A LESS EXPENSIVE ALTERNATIVE

With domestic and international adoptions costing into the tens of thousands of dollars, many families who might otherwise choose to adopt find themselves unable to manage the financial burdens. At the same time, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Children's Bureau reports that nearly 400,000 American children were in foster care in 2012 and of those, about a quarter were waiting to be adopted. The majority of children who are adopted through foster care also receive a medical or financial subsidy from their state until they reach the age of majority which helps to further reduce the family's costs.
